Helping you take control of incontinence
When you laugh, sneeze, cough or exercise, do you sometimes leak a small amount of urine?
Are you ever "caught short" by a sudden, strong urge to pass urine?
Do you arrange your daily routine around where the nearest toilets will be?
Do you wake frequently during the night to go to the toilet?
At Spine and Pelvis Physiotherapy we are able to use Real Time Ultrasound to help you visualise the activation of your pelvic floor muscles. This is a completely non – invasive technique that can determine whether you are correctly activating the pelvic floor muscles. Once the correct activation is achieved this is then integrated into functional positions and specific exercise retraining.
Some Important Facts:
2 million Australians are incontinent, 70% of these are female
1 in 3 women who have had a baby will suffer from some form of incontinence in her lifetime.
The prevalence can range from 9 - 72% in the community.
(Chiarelli and Cockburn, 2002)
But also:
More than 30% of women are not able to contract when first instructed
25% were straining instead - depressing the pelvic floor will exacerbate pelvic floor dysfunction!
RTU is a valid and reliable method to retrain pelvic floor function
(BØ 2003, Parkkinen et al 2004)
